Consumer protection: What happens if my Direct Debit is rejected?

If your payment cannot be made to the creditor because of insufficient funds in your account, your bank can reject / return the debit request. This will incur bank charges. You may also be charged a penalty by the merchant.
If you still owe a balance to the merchant, contact him/her and pay the amount due by another means, respecting the agreed-upon schedule and due dates. Non-payment of this amount could result in cancellation of the service provided by the merchant and other action on his/ her part.
